Portable fire-fighting equipment
Fire blanket
Thrown over a small fire, it cuts off the oxygen. The typical place: the galley, where fat or clothing catches fire.
Key facts
- It works by smothering: it covers the burning object tightly and cuts off the oxygen.
- It must survive at least two uses: in the type test the blanket puts out the test fire twice, and after the first use it may not crack or shed fabric.
- Equipment that protects from fire (blankets, clothing, gloves) comes with the maker’s declaration that it is asbestos-free.
Legal basis
European standard EN 1869 (fire blankets); asbestos-free requirement per SOLAS.
This is not a legal text: when in doubt, the current wording of the Convention and the FSS Code decides.
