Single-letter meaning (Pub 102)
I require a pilot. When made by fishing vessels operating in close proximity on the fishing grounds it means: "I am hauling nets".
Morse sign
−−·
Dot = short sound, dash = long (three times longer). Hear it in the Morse translator.
In plain English
A request for a pilot: the ship is approaching a port or fairway and needs a pilot on board. On the fishing grounds the same flag on a fishing vessel tells her neighbours she is hauling nets.
Where you will really see it
Today a pilot is ordered through the agent and by radio, but the signal remains valid and is still shown on the approach to a pilot station.
Common mix-up
G and H are the pilot pair: G means the ship is still asking for a pilot, H that the pilot is already on board.
Careful with sound
Signal G belongs to the group marked with an asterisk in the code: when made by SOUND it may only be made in compliance with the collision regulations (COLREGs). By flag or light there is no such restriction.
