Water-spray system
Spray nozzles deliver atomised water into the protected space or onto the protected equipment. It defends cargo holds, machinery spaces and store rooms.
Key facts
- Started manually or automatically; the water goes through spray nozzles fitted in the protected space.
- A separate variant is the water curtain. It makes a belt of atomised water that stops a fire from spreading or shields the structure from heat radiation.
- On tankers and special purpose ships, water spray also protects outer surfaces and escape routes.
On the fire control plan
These are not bulkhead signs: a system is marked with its symbol on the fire control plan (IMO res. A.1116(30), table 3).
Legal basis
SOLAS II-2; FSS Code chapter 7 (water-spray systems).
This is not a legal text: when in doubt, the current wording of the Convention and the FSS Code decides.
