Structure and escape
Means of escape
Designated, marked and lit routes from every part of the ship straight to the muster station or the embarkation station.
Key facts
- An escape route leads directly to the muster or embarkation station and is properly marked and lit.
- Escape, in the meaning of the rules, is the ordered movement of people to a safe place under the threat of fire.
- On passenger ships the escape routes are backed by low-location lighting (near the floor), visible when the smoke collects under the ceiling.
Legal basis
SOLAS II-2/13 (means of escape); FSS Code chapter 11 (low-location lighting), chapter 13 (arrangement of means of escape).
This is not a legal text: when in doubt, the current wording of the Convention and the FSS Code decides.
