The fire main

A standardised coupling through which a shore fire brigade (or another ship) feeds water into the fire main when the ship’s own pumps are dead.
Key facts
- One side is a plain flange of standardised dimensions; the other, a coupling that fits the given ship’s hydrant valve or hose.
- The flange dimensions are identical worldwide, so the services in any port can feed water into the ship’s system.
- It is kept in an easily accessible place, marked with the symbol from the fire control plan.
